In sound mind tapes10/23/2022 ![]() ![]() The noise and imperfections that comes with tapes are inherently part of the appeal. ![]() Bands that still release tapes are acknowledging the humble beginnings their "scene" had. The easy access to recording equipment for mixtapes allowed for artists to get a start. For instance, tapes were extremely important in the early Norwegian black metal scene as well as underground hip-hop. It's largely influenced by what you listen to. No one makes good tape transports, there are two chinese manufacturers that make crap and that gets into today tape machines. Today, though, no one makes quality tapes, and what you can get and buy as esoteric music distribution medium is utter crap. Tape decks were great back in days when the manufacturers actually competed against each others. For reference, vinyls have around 70 dB SNR if you are lucky, and if you had tape deck with DBX, you could get to 90 dB, and with high quality deck, you can get 20 Hz to 20 kHz response off from metal (Type IV) tapes. For other tapes you had to calibrate the bias and level, and when applied Dolby C or S, you got almost noiseless reproduction - Dolby C had around 74 dB SNR, Dolby S around 80 dB. ![]() Now, standard quality tape was TDK SA series, chrome type tape to which most japan based decks were calibrated to. When I entered music hobby, tape decks had Dolby B and C - few had DBX and in 90's entered Dolby S. You obviously didn't hear good cassette deck, and good noise reduction system. I've had more than 500 cassettes, mostly recorded from CDs, some from vinyl and few from other tapes. I said it back then and I’ll say it again now, good riddance to cassette tapes, aint nobody got time for that. nostalgia is cool now for nostalgia sake only? Either that or they hold some kind of antique value for collectors. Let it go.įrom memory, even when cassette tapes were popular, most people knew they were a crap medium that were just a place-holding technology between 8-tracks/magnetic-tape-mediums and digital.Ĭassettes are a dead medium and spending money on a look that offers no other benefit is silly, and my only conclusion is that people like them because they have no concept of when/why that technology was phased out, and. We used to make mix-tapes and draw all over the cassette jackets, it was a place-in-time, and that's not coming back, at least not on cassette. Is there something I am missing? It seems like the only reason to walk around with a Walkman or to have a cassette player in your at-home chain is nothing more than just being able to say “I have this thing”. Optical disks (cd, laser disk ect) can be high resolution and have a long shelf life, cassettes are/do not.ĭigital formats/streaming offer web access, can be high quality, and take up little to no physical space, cassettes do not. Vinyl is reference audio quality, cassettes are not. Also, they’re all terrifying. From what I understand, listening to cassette tapes is purely an exercise in nostalgia and aesthetics, which is strange to me since I grew up in the 80’s/90’s, and they sucked back then too.Ĭassette tapes offer every negative quality across all mediums, and none of the benefits. Each tape serves as a portal to a distinct new area where you can relive what happened to your patients, and hopefully find a way to move forward. If you want to find out what happened–and more importantly, why it happened–you must dig up the tapes of Desmond’s therapy sessions. ![]() Exploring quickly reveals a sinister truth: the once-bustling town of Milton Haven is now empty, flooded, and unwelcoming. “Right off the bat, you’re gonna see that something is wrong,” promised Lead Producer and We Create Stuff Co-Founder Ido in an interview with us, and we believe him. Players take on the role of Desmond, a psychologist whose patients have a history of dying on him, as he wakes up in an abandoned building with no clue how he got there. Judging by everything we’ve seen and heard from developer We Create Stuff, the upcoming psychological horror title In Sound Mind will be a type three. #In sound mind tapes skinThe best get so deep under your skin that they make you genuinely afraid for both. Others make you fear for the protagonist’s sanity. Some horror games make you fear for the protagonist’s safety. ![]()
